Course Description:
This course further develops advanced level Japanese through building and expanding knowledge of Japanese history as a dynamic, interrelated system and employs a variety of processes to identify, analyze and evaluate cultural themes, values and ideas. Students will demonstrate ability to accurately comprehend ideas across a range of historical content. Taught in Japanese.
Reflective Narrative:
This course not only informed me about facts regarding the History of Japan, but also taught me a lot about the language and the culture itself. The whole class was taught in Japanese- from asking and answering questions, to discussions about that day’s reading. I found in immensely helpful that every time we would do a new reading, everyone in the class went over it together. It made it possible for classmates to be supportive of one another when they had difficulty with a word and improve our Japanese language ability as a whole. These are the reasons why this class helps to fulfill our MLO 1 on Language and communication and our MLO 2 on culture. I had learned aspects of Japanese History before, but being able to learn more in depth has helped give me a deeper understanding of the culture and language as a whole. For my final presentation in this class I researched about “開国と外国からの影響” or “The opening of the country and foreign influences” which focused on the beginning of the Meiji period and focused on the major westernizations that took place during that time. It was a great experience to learn more information based off of what we had learned in class.
