1.1
When I transferred into CSUMB, I had already spent about 5 years learning Japanese. However, I knew that I still had a long way to go to becoming proficient in the language. Therefore, I studied hard in order to be competent in my communication abilities. At the beginning of my time here, my proficiency level according to my STAMP test was between intermediate low and high. Now, after three years of intensive study, my proficiency levels have improved and raised up to being between Intermediate High and Advance Low. My study abroad experience has also helped my develop my language skills as well.
1.2
I especially found my JAPN 303: Business Japanese class to be helpful in my understanding of appropriate manners in professional settings and well as how to follow the rules of Japanese Discourse. An example of the culmination of my work is the Final Project that I did for the class, which can be found under JAPN 303. Another class that was very beneficial was my JAPN 304: Japanese Interpretation and Translation class. Through that course I was able to learn more about the technical side of the language, because I was learning to translate which had a different aspect of understanding the language. For my class, we did a project where we had to try translating captions from newspapers, which was a very difficult but rewarding experience.
