2.1
Thanks to my JAPN308 and JAPN310, I was able to learn a great deal about Japanese Culture; the perspectives, practices, and products of the Japanese Culture. In Japanese Cinema, I was able to get a look at movies that were made in Japan during different eras, portrayed a myriad of different themes and ideas from Japan. Everything from learning how to analyze and critique the films, to being able to discuss the historical, social, and cultural context displayed in the varied films. At the end of the class, all this was brought together in my final paper which can be viewed here. Thanks to my Japanese Pop-Culture course, I was able to study more in depth about everything from Anime to Religion. there were many interesting facets of the culture that I was able to learn about, which is shown by my final paper, linked here. Study abroad also greatly aided my Japanese speaking capabilities, due to the fact that I was living there as a part of the culture.
2.2
In my classes, JAPN309 and JAPN311, I was able to develop critical thinking and analytical skills when applied to background influences on modern Japanese life and comparing the culture on a global scale. In Social Issues in Japan, we had a project where we compared cultural aspects of other countries with japan, and also investigation social issues present in specific regions in Japan, which can be viewed here. In my Japanese Literature in Translation class, we learned all about historical aspect of Japanese Culture. By reading stories like The Pillow Book and The Tale of Genji, we were able to take a look into the past, thanks to the details contained within the books. In my final paper, which can be downloaded Here, is a culmination of what I learned in this class. I got to experience a different register between speking casually and formally in a real life setting, thanks to my time studying abroad.
