Course Description:
As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as aging and depopulation, equitable treatment of homeless individuals and other minorities, gender and labor issues, social withdrawals, educational structure problems, and ecological concerns. Taught in English.
Reflective Narrative:
In this class, we went over past and current social issues that affected Japanese society. There were many issues covered, but among them the ones that stuck out to me was the declining and aging population of Japan, Gender and Labour issues in the modern works force, and educational structure issues. One thing I learned in this class that surprised me was learning about the intensity of Job Hunting in Japan for college Juniors and Seniors. There were also projects that we did in groups where we presented on social issues in different countries around the world. This class ties together with the other Japanese culture courses that I have taken by helping me understand a different side of Japanese culture. In the future, I would like to study more in depth into the Gender Issues that take place in Japanese society.
