Course Description:
This course explores post WWII Japanese music, literature, artistic media, and hi-tech products. Investigates social themes ranging from post-holocaust Japanese hedonism to childhood fantasies by looking at Manga comic books, Animation, and popular music, as well as fashion and style, popular technology, consumerism, and environmental issues. Explores the evolution of pop culture and its impact on society. Taught in English.
Reflective Narrative:
In this course, we learned a myriad of things to do with Japanese Pop-Culture- everything from Anime to Religion. One thing that I found particularly interesting was the times when those two subjects overlapped. There were movies that portrayed aspects of Japanese Religion, such as Spirited Away, which we watched in class. There was also the case where a shrine had an Anime Figurine made in the image of the Goddess that the shrine was dedicated to. This was made in the effort to increase the number of visitors to the shrine, and to help keep it relevant. I greatly enjoyed learning about new aspects of Japanese Culture and I look forward to learning more. For this class, I wrote my final paper on Japanese Horror, which is linked below.
